Stand in the hollow at the foot of the plateau. The Sphinx was not stacked block by block; it was cut out of the living rock and left standing. Egyptians call it Abu el-Hol, the father of dread. We look at the face, the worn body, the stone between the paws, and the pyramid it guards.
