Two lines, one from the east and one from the west, aimed at a meeting in Utah. Grading, ties, iron, and crews who lived in camps beside the work. Chinese laborers and Irish laborers carried much of that line, often at unequal pay and unequal danger. The golden spike is a ceremony. The road under it is their work.
