December at Kitty Hawk, a cold wind off the Atlantic. The machine is wood, cloth, and a pilot who can warp the wings. Lift is what air does to a curved surface when it moves fast enough. Controls are how a person stays in that lift. We go to the rail, the wind, and the seconds they were up.
